Each year, over 2.8 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury. While many recover fully, more than 5 million live with permanent brain injury-related disabilities—about 1 in 60 people.

Every brain injury is unique. The cause, care received, and the person’s life before and after the injury all play a role in shaping the survivor’s journey. This journey isn’t linear—there are ups and downs, with some paths hidden and others requiring support.
Living with a brain injury requires resilience, and often, it’s a solitary path. But despite the differences in each experience, the common goal is to navigate life as best as possible and find joy in the unexpected. Embracing this new version of life empowers us to share our stories, speak our truth, and help break misconceptions about brain injury.
Everyone’s brain injury story deserves to be told, and it’s up to us, as survivors and supporters, to tell them. Because the more people who know the truth about brain injuries, the fewer misconceptions there will be. This Brain Injury Awareness Month, we encourage you to share your story about your own unique brain injury journey at biausa.org/MyBrainInjuryJourney.
